Everything We Know About PlayStation 5 and Xbox's Project Scarlett

Written by

The next consoles from Sony and Microsoft have been confirmed! Although we currently only have a release date for one of them, we've managed to sieve through the rumour mill and pick out the confirmed facts. PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett will be going head to head in a battle for the next generation top spot. So, here's everything we know...

PlayStation 5

  • The PS5 won’t be coming in 2019. Sony has yet to release an official date, but we know it won’t be until 2020 at the earliest.
  • 8K resolution will be available on supported displays.
  • Gamers will enjoy improved loading times - up to 19 times faster, thanks to the custom-built SSD. This will make for more seamless gameplay, something that developers are really excited for.

  • The PS5 will pack an advanced AMD Ryzen processor.
  • The team are using GPU with AMD Navi architecture, providing real-time ray tracing (we had to look up what this meant too) for more realistic lighting and shadow dynamics. This will help games appear more lifelike.
  • The PS5 will be backwards compatible! It hasn't yet been confirmed how big this library of games will be and how many generations it will go back for.
  • The PS5 will be compatible with the existing PSVR. A next-generation PSVR has not yet been confirmed.
  • Your console will still have a physical disc drive, which is good news for retailers that sell physical copies. And gamers that prefer them.

Xbox Project Scarlett

  • The new Xbox console will arrive in autumn 2020 (between October and December). Just in time to be wrapped up under the Christmas tree!

  • Project Scarlett will also be backwards compatible.
  • The new console will be 4 times more powerful than the Xbox One X, an already impressive machine, this just shows how high Microsoft are shooting with their next generation.
  • A custom-designed processor from AMD with Navi architecture sounds somewhat similar to the PS5.
  • 120 Hz frame rates, 8K resolution and real-time ray tracing, similar to the PS5. This provides the most effortless and realistic gaming experience for users, and gives developers a platform to create some real masterpieces.
  • Improved loading times to a factor of 40x thanks to the custom-built SSD. Long loading screens are becoming the stuff of ancient legend, finally!
  • There will be a physical disk drive, something that many gamers had concerns over after the release of the digital-only Xbox One S console earlier this year. Despite this, both Microsoft and Sony will be heavily investing in cloud-based game subscription services in the near future.

Neither firm has confirmed the price of their console at this stage, but based on the specs provided they are going to be pricey machines. Rumours are estimating around the £400-£500 mark, maybe even more. This might seem very steep but when you consider what both companies are trying to achieve and the components they are including, some that can be found in custom PC builds, it is no surprise really. So there you have it, that's everything we know about PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett. We will add regular updates as and when new details emerge but for now, why don’t you leave us a comment? Which machine are you most excited about? We'd love to hear your opinions.Want some new games to play while you're waiting for the next generation of consoles to arrive? Check out our August release schedule!
