Sony has revealed the latest console to join their ranks - the PS5 pro!
In a technical presentation livestream hosted by Mark Cerny, the lead architect for PS5 Pro, Sony unveiled the next step in gaming with their PS5 Pro.
Hardware Upgrades
Sony made some big promises throughout the livestream, including claims that they have been able to create a console that runs "even higher fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates at 60FPS" but how are they achieving it?
- Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
- Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
- AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.
- Wi-Fi 7: launching with Wi-Fi 7 as standard in territories that can support it
In addition to these amazing new features the PS5 Pro is also capable of supporting VRR and 8k gaming.
Game Upgrades
It's not just the hardware that's getting an upgrade, another major perk of the PS5 Pro is the introduction of the PS5 Pro Game Boost which will apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games - this means improved performance and enhanced image quality on your favourite PS4 games.
It won't only be PS4 games getting the upgrade, expect a number of PS5 games to also benefit from the enhanced PS5 Pro - some games already confirmed to be getting the PS5 Pro Enhanced label include Alan Wake 2, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered.
Even games that don't get the full PS5 Pro Enhanced treatment are set to benefit from the included "boost" mode that is said to improve the performance of PS5 games - similar to the impact the PS4 Pro's boost mode.
Price and Availability
This is the painful part ... in the UK a PS5 Pro on day one will set you back £699.99.
When you compare this with the original launch price of the PS5 being £349.99 it's a bit of a large pill to swallow - to add insult to injury the PS5 Pro does not come with a disc drive or vertical stand as standard. If you're a physical gamer and want to play your disc games on the PS5 Pro it will set you back a further £99.99 and another £24.99 for the official stand. Ouch.
We don't have long to wait to get our hands on the PS5 Pro - the latest Sony console is set to be available from the 7th November 2024.
