Growing up in the 90s and early 00s, everyone had their console of choice. Maybe yours was the N64, the Gameboy, or the newly launched PlayStation. For me, it was the sleek and slim-line PS One. I spent countless hours and hours playing. It’s time for a flashback trip down memory lane to look at the games that shaped us…
Starting Young
At the tender age of 8, I was introduced to now-classic titles such as Rayman, Crash Team Racing (soon to be released as a remaster on PS4!), Spyro and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2.You could say it was a tame selection, but Resident Evil 2 and Metal Gear Solid, although pixelated, were way too violent for a kid! When I could be peeled away from the PS One long enough for my parents to unplug the SCART cable from the tv, I could be found playing Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (the start of a lifelong obsession) or Mario Tennis on my Gameboy Colour.
Racing Through Life
It was Crash Team Racing that had the most impact on me. From there I progressed to titles like Burnout Revenge and the Need for Speed series, games I still go back to even now as an adult. While many would consider this retro-gaming, I never really stopped playing them to begin with!Open world racing games are great for a bit of escapism, even if they were a fairly new concept back then. Plus, you can convince yourself you’re a hell of a lot cooler than you are in real life. Even if only for an hour or two!Did you play any of these titles when you were growing up? What were your favourite PS One games? And maybe the most important question of all… what colour was your Gameboy?
