Cheating in games is something which has been rife for as long as gaming has been a thing. There's always someone out there who wants to try and strive for the upper hand, whether that's by unlocking weapons to give you the edge or upping your health. Not all cheats are welcomed by the community, however some developers take great disgust to cheating. We've listed our favourite times developers mock gamers for cheating.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Cheating in games to gain more coin is pretty common, but in the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt it is heavily frowned upon. If you find yourself in one of the villages in White Orchard and decide to repeatedly slaughter the cows for their hides, well the game has something in store for you. Taking advantage of this loophole will see you attacked by a powerful monster called a Chort. You can try and fight the monster but its one hit kill will make easy work of you. You'll even be trolled in a later mission named "The Taxman Cometh. "You'll be questioned by the taxman with him asking, “Have you ever engaged in the wholesale trade of rawhide in the White Orchard area?"
Postal 2
Postal 2 isn't for the faint hearted and easily offended in the slightest due to being known for its controversial level of violence and risky humour, New Zealand certainly felt strongly against the game when it banned it indefinitely. The game doesn't hold its punches with mocking the player either, to even enable cheats you need to input "sissy" and you know it's worked when you get the message “Cheats are enabled. Hope you're happy”.Whilst frequently quick saving isn't a cheat, the game will still mock you for it - “My grandmother could beat the game if she saved as much as you do!'”
Grand Theft Auto V
Rockstar have different levels of punishments for cheaters. Cheating in games can vary from unlocking skins all the way up to being invincible. Anything classed as a "minor" cheat will earn you a Dunce cap which cannot be removed and forever shaming you as a cheat. Major cheats are a bit more deadly though with your car exploding whenever you exit it making it impossible to take full advantage.
Tomb Raider 2
Rumors of a cheat to unlock all weapons and levels in a game led to the discovery of this trolling method by the game developers. The alleged way to activate the cheat was by taking one step forward, one step backward, turn around three times, then jumping backwards, however instead of unlocking a bountiful amount of weapons Lara would explode into tiny pieces. Then those pieces would explode into even tinier pieces.
Animal Crossing
Not so much of a cheat compared to the others, but in Nintendo's cutest game ever if you reset the game after making a decision you didn't like you'll get a visit from Mr Resetti. He will promptly chastise you for resetting the game before reminding you that "There is no reset button on life!"
Donkey Kong 64
It's not just modern games which have the ability for cheats to be used, 1999's Donkey Kong 64 did not appreciate the use of cheat tech like GameShark. Using this cheating tech will make the character shake uncontrollably, unable to pick anything up and be killed in one hit, therefore rendering him useless.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Playing on easy is nothing to be ashamed of ... sometimes. In this game if you opt for the super easy mode then Snake will be forced to wear a chicken hat which is there even in the cut scenes. So you'll be exposed to everybody and they would know you're playing on super easy.
The Stanley Parable
We wouldn't recommend trying to cheat in this game, entering "type sv_cheats 1" into the game commands will get you sent to "The Serious Room" and given a stern talking to in the form of the most boring lecture ever. You're told by the narrator that you're stuck in the room for "one hundred billion trillion years." Bit of an extreme detention if you ask me.
